Lantana

Lantana is a sprawling, aromatic shrub in the verbena family, native to tropical America but naturalised across warm regions worldwide. Its rough, toothed leaves smell pungent when crushed, and its flat-topped flower clusters change colour as they age, often mixing pink, yellow and orange in a single head.

• Each flower head shifts colour after pollination, so the plant signals to butterflies which blooms are still worth visiting.
• It is listed among the world's most invasive plants and has taken over large areas of the Azores and many Pacific islands.
• The unripe green berries are toxic to livestock and people, though birds happily eat the ripe black ones and spread the seeds.

Care
Give it full sun and sharp drainage, cut it back hard in late winter, and grow it in a pot where it is invasive so seedlings cannot escape.
