The peace lily is a tropical evergreen from the rainforest floors of Central and South America, grown almost everywhere indoors for its glossy dark leaves and white flowers. Each "flower" is really a creamy hood (spathe) wrapped around a knobby spike (spadix) that carries the tiny true flowers.
- The white hood is a modified leaf, not a petal, and it slowly fades to green as the flower ages.
- Peace lilies were included in NASA's clean-air studies for their ability to take up airborne compounds like benzene and formaldehyde.
- Like most aroids, the sap contains calcium oxalate crystals, which is why chewing a leaf burns the mouth of curious pets.
Care
Keep it in bright indirect light and water when the leaves just begin to droop, then drain fully to avoid soggy roots and more brown leaf tips.
