Oleander

Oleander is an evergreen shrub from the Mediterranean and southwest Asia, grown worldwide in warm climates for its long summer show of pink, red or white flowers. It has narrow leathery leaves in whorls of three and grows into a dense multi-stemmed bush two to four metres tall.

• Every part of the plant is highly toxic — even smoke from burning branches can be an irritant.
• Oleander is so tough it was among the first plants to flower again in Hiroshima after 1945, and is the city's official flower.
• Its milky sap contains cardiac glycosides similar in action to the heart drug digitalis.

Care
Plant in full sun with free-draining soil, prune after flowering to keep it bushy, and wear gloves since the sap is poisonous.
