Chinese trumpet creeper

A vigorous woody climbing vine from East Asia with pinnate leaves made of toothed, pointed leaflets and showy funnel-shaped orange-red flowers. It scrambles over walls, fences and trees using aerial rootlets and twining stems, blooming through the warm months.

• The broad, shallow flare of the flowers separates it from the American trumpet vine, whose blooms are longer and more tubular.
• Its nectar-rich trumpets are shaped for birds — hummingbirds in America, sunbirds and large bees in Asia.
• Dried flowers have long been used in traditional Chinese medicine under the name 'ling xiao hua'.

Care
Give it full sun and a very sturdy support, then prune hard in late winter to keep its fast, heavy growth under control.
